The TSURUMI KTZE23.7 is a three-phase submersible dewatering pump from Tsurumi's KTZE series (officially classed as a general construction pump, automatic operation type). It has a 50 mm (2-inch) discharge and a 3.7 kW 2-pole motor. The "E" in the model name stands for automatic operation: an electrode level-control device built into the pump starts it when water reaches the electrode and stops it after the level falls, so no float switch or external control panel is needed. A grey cast-iron body and a semi-open high-chromium cast-iron impeller suit it to draining water carrying a small amount of sand on construction sites, in basements and in aggregate yards. The KTZE23.7 has the highest head in the KTZE series.

Selection note: the KTZE23.7 is the automatic version of the KTZ23.7. If you want to start and stop the pump from an external control panel or by hand, choose the non-automatic KTZ23.7. The KTZE is a dewatering pump, not a slurry pump: it has no agitator and is not suitable for settled sludge, bentonite or dense sand slurry.

Key features

Electrode automatic operation: the electrode probe and relay are built into the pump. When water touches the electrode, current flows between the electrode and the pump body and the pump starts. Once the water falls below the electrode, a built-in timer stops the pump after about 1 minute; if water touches the electrode again in that time, the pump runs for another minute. This prevents dry running and the frequent cycling a turbulent water surface would otherwise cause.
Lower power use: up to 40% less power than non-automatic pumps, based on Tsurumi's own comparison. Actual savings depend on site conditions.
Top-discharge, side-flow design: the motor stays cooled even when partly exposed, and the body stays slim enough for narrow pits and sumps.
Multi-directional hose coupling: the discharge can be set vertical or inclined to stop the hose kinking.
Double inside mechanical seals: silicon carbide (SiC) faces running in the oil chamber, with Tsurumi's Oil Lifter keeping the seals lubricated and cooled down to about 1/3 of the normal oil level. Tsurumi rates silicon carbide at 5 times the corrosion, wear and heat resistance of tungsten carbide.
Wear-resistant impeller: semi-open high-chromium cast-iron impeller and ductile-iron suction cover; 420 stainless-steel shaft, quenched where it meets particles in the liquid.
Built-in circle thermal protector (CTP): cuts the motor circuit directly on overheating or overcurrent.
Anti-wicking cable entry and cable clip: limit water creeping along the cable into the motor and hold the cable in place.

Performance

The 36.4 m maximum head is the head at near-zero flow, and the 449 L/min (about 27 m³/h) maximum capacity is the end point of the performance curve (Tsurumi Europe data, 400 V 50 Hz). The two do not occur together: actual flow falls as total head (static head plus hose friction loss) rises. Select the pump from the performance curve using your site's total head. If you need more flow at a lower head, consider the other 3.7 kW models, the KTZE33.7 (80 mm, 898 L/min) or KTZE43.7 (100 mm, 1,432 L/min).

Safety and installation

This is a three-phase direct-on-line pump. Electrical connection must be made by a registered electrical worker in line with local regulations, with a proper earth and earth-leakage protection. The motor's built-in CTP does not replace upstream short-circuit, overload and earth-leakage protection.
Starting current is high (about 58 A at 400 V, Tsurumi Europe data), so size generators and circuit breakers to suit.
Check the direction of rotation before first use. Wrong phase sequence on a three-phase supply reverses the pump and reduces performance; if needed, have an electrician swap two phases.
Electrode control relies on the liquid conducting current. Very low-conductivity liquid may not trigger a start, so test on site.
The pump can start at any moment once the electrode is wet. Always isolate the power before handling, lifting or servicing.
The pump weighs about 69 kg dry. Use lifting gear and lift by the handle; never lift the pump by its cable.
Stand the pump on a firm base or blocks so it does not draw in mud and gravel. Raising it on blocks also sets the start level.
The standard model is for liquids at 0–40 °C and is not seawater-resistant. Do not use it for chemicals, oil, solvents, sewage containing fibres, or flammable or hazardous liquids, or in flammable or explosive atmospheres.

Wear parts and routine checks

Main wear parts: impeller, suction cover, mechanical seals and oil seal. With long running in sandy water, the impeller and suction cover gradually wear and flow drops.
Check the oil level and condition in the oil chamber regularly (turbine oil ISO VG32, 1,250 ml). If the oil is cloudy or contains water, have the shaft seals inspected promptly.
The CTP resets automatically once the motor cools. Find the cause of any trip before putting the pump back into service.
