The TSURUMI KTVE35.5 is a three-phase automatic submersible dewatering pump from Tsurumi's KTVE series (officially classed as a general construction pump, automatic operation type). It has an 80 mm (3-inch) discharge and a 5.5 kW 2-pole motor. A built-in electrode control device starts the pump when water reaches the probe and stops it after the level falls, so no float switch or external control panel is needed. The body is die-cast aluminium alloy with synthetic rubber sleeves protecting the casing and water passages, giving a dry weight of 52 kg. It suits construction and foundation works and storm or flood drainage, handling stormwater, groundwater, wash water and sand-carrying water (solids up to 8.5 mm, liquid 0–40 °C).

Selection note: the KTVE35.5 is a dewatering pump, not a slurry pump. It has no agitator and is not suitable for settled sludge or dense sand slurry; for that duty, choose a slurry pump with an agitator such as the KTD33.7. The KTVE and KTZE series share the same official classification (general construction pump, automatic operation type). The difference is the build: KTVE has a lightweight aluminium body with a ductile-iron impeller, while KTZE has a grey cast-iron body with a high-chromium cast-iron impeller. If your site already has a float switch or control panel and you do not need automatic operation, consider the non-automatic cast-iron KTZ35.5.

Key features

Electrode automatic operation: the electrode probe and relay unit are built into the pump. When water touches the probe, current flows between the electrode and the pump body and the pump starts. A built-in timer stops it about one minute after the water falls below the probe; if the water touches the probe again within that time, the pump runs for one more minute. This prevents dry-running and the chattering caused by a turbulent water surface.
Lower power use: by eliminating dry-running, power consumption can be up to 40% lower than with non-automatic pumps (Tsurumi comparison).
Lightweight aluminium body: die-cast aluminium alloy frame, with wear-resistant synthetic rubber sleeves (butadiene rubber + natural rubber) protecting the pump casing, oil casing and water passages. Dry weight is 52 kg, so it is easy to move around site.
Top-discharge, side-flow design: the motor stays cooled even when partly exposed to air, and the slim body fits confined spaces.
Dual inside mechanical seals: silicon carbide (SiC) faces on both upper and lower seals, running in an oil chamber with Tsurumi's Oil Lifter, which keeps the seal faces lubricated and cooled down to about one third of the normal oil level. Tsurumi rates silicon carbide at five times the corrosion, wear and heat resistance of tungsten carbide.
Wear-resistant hydraulics: semi-vortex ductile-iron impeller; a 304 stainless-steel protection plate shields the aluminium oil casing from abrasive particles; an NBR V-ring acts as a dust seal for the mechanical seals.
Motor protection: built-in circle thermal protector (CTP) cuts the motor circuit directly on overheating or overcurrent.
Cable protection: anti-wicking cable entry limits water creeping along the cable cores into the motor, and a cable clip protects the cable from tugging on site.

Applications

Construction and foundation works: dewatering of excavations, basements and trenches
Storms and flooding: several automatic pumps can be set at different heights so they start in turn as the water rises, for example to protect an underground car park

Performance

The 34.9 m maximum head is the head at near-zero flow, and the 976.4 L/min maximum capacity is the end point of the performance curve. The two do not occur together: actual flow falls as total head (static head plus hose friction loss) rises. Select the pump from the performance curve using your site's total head. These figures are Tsurumi Europe data at 400 V 50 Hz; Tsurumi UK lists about 35 m and 980 L/min.

Safety and installation

This is a three-phase, direct-on-line pump. Electrical connection must be made by a registered electrical worker in line with local regulations, with a proper earth and earth-leakage protection. The built-in CTP does not replace upstream short-circuit, overload and earth-leakage protection.
Check rotation before first use. On a three-phase pump, wrong phase sequence reverses rotation and reduces performance; if it turns the wrong way, have an electrician swap two phases.
Starting current is high (about 65 A at 400 V). Size generators and breakers to suit.
Electrode control relies on the liquid conducting current between the probe and the pump body. Very low-conductivity liquid may not trigger a start, so test on site.
The pump can start at any moment once the probe is wet. Isolate the power before handling, lifting, inspecting or servicing.
Lift the pump by its handle, never by the cable. At 52 kg dry weight, use lifting gear or a two-person lift.
Stand the pump on a firm base or blocks so it does not draw in mud and gravel; raising it on blocks also raises the starting water level.
The standard model is not seawater-resistant. Do not pump liquids above 40 °C or flammable or hazardous liquids, and do not use it in flammable or explosive atmospheres.

Wear parts and routine checks

Main wear parts: impeller, protection plate, V-ring and mechanical seals. With long running in sandy water, parts in contact with sand gradually wear and flow drops.
Regularly check the oil in the oil chamber (turbine oil ISO VG32, 680 ml). If the oil is cloudy or contains water, have the shaft seals inspected promptly.
Regularly check that the electrode probe is clean and undamaged, and that the cable sheath is intact.
After the CTP trips, the motor resets and restarts automatically once it cools; find the cause of the overheating or overcurrent first.
