The TSURUMI LB-480 110V is the single-phase 110V version of Tsurumi's LB-series portable dewatering pump (listed by Tsurumi Hong Kong under Submersible Pumps > Dewatering > Portable Dewatering Pumps). It has a 50 mm discharge and a 0.48 kW 2-pole single-phase capacitor-run motor. The slim body fits inside an 8-inch pipe or well casing, and its 10.4 kg dry weight (without cable) makes it easy to carry and set up. It is intended for sites running on a 110V supply, for temporary drainage of excavation water, seepage and rain water.
This is the manual version, with no float switch or electrode level control, so it is started and stopped by an external switch or control box. The manufacturer's model code is LB-480; "110V" identifies the supply version only and is not part of Tsurumi's model code. Tsurumi builds 110V versions for both 50 Hz and 60 Hz markets, and their performance differs. The figures below are 50 Hz data; always confirm the voltage and frequency on the nameplate.
Selection note: the LB-480 is a dewatering pump, not a sewage pump. It is not suited to sewage containing fibres or large solids, nor to slurry. For automatic start/stop by water level, choose the LB-480A 110V automatic model (electrode level control). Where 220V single-phase mains is used, choose the LB-480 (220V). For more head or flow on a 110V supply, choose the 0.75 kW LB-800A 110V automatic model.
Key features
- Slim body: fits inside an 8-inch pipe or well casing for well-point and deep-well dewatering, and sits easily in narrow pits.
- Top discharge, flow-thru design: water passes around the motor for maximum cooling, so the pump can run continuously at low water levels and has extended dry-run capability (continuous running water level about 50 mm).
- Multi-directional hose coupling: set vertical or inclined so the discharge hose does not fold; loosen the coupling cap nut to change direction.
- Abrasion-resistant wear parts: Tsurumi states this gives durability equivalent to its three-phase drainage pumps.
- Semi-vortex urethane rubber impeller: passes solids up to 6 mm, suited to site water carrying sand and silt.
- Dual inside mechanical seals: silicon carbide (SiC) faces running in an oil chamber. Tsurumi states SiC has five times the corrosion, wear and heat resistance of tungsten carbide. Tsurumi's original Oil Lifter keeps the seal faces lubricated down to one third of the normal oil level.
- V-ring dust seal: a nitrile rubber (NBR) V-ring keeps abrasive particles away from the mechanical seal.
- Built-in miniature thermal protector (MTP): trips on overheating or overcurrent, including overheating from dry running, and resets automatically once cool.
- Anti-wicking cable entry: treated cable cores limit water creeping along the cable into the motor; a cable clip reduces strain on the cable.
- Continuous-duty rated: dry-type induction motor, 2-pole, insulation class E, capacitor run.
Applications
- Construction sites: water and seepage removal from excavations, trenches and pits (with a small amount of sand and silt)
- Well-point and deep-well dewatering: the body fits inside an 8-inch pipe or well casing
- Rain water and temporary drainage: standing water after storms, maintenance work and low-lying areas
- 110V site supplies: for sites and workplaces powered at 110V
Water only: clean water or water containing a little sand and silt (up to 10% dry matter, pH 5–9, 0–40 °C). Not for sewage, slurry, seawater or salt water, oil, organic solvents or chemicals, and never for drinking water.
Performance
At 50 Hz, the 11 m maximum head is the head at near-zero flow, and the 220 L/min (0.22 m³/min, about 13.2 m³/h) maximum capacity is the end point of the performance curve. The two do not occur together: actual flow falls as total head (static head plus hose friction loss) rises. Select the pump from the performance curve using your site's total head.
If the supplied unit's nameplate shows 60 Hz, Tsurumi's published 60 Hz performance is 12 m maximum head and 0.24 m³/min maximum capacity. A 60 Hz unit is out of specification on a 50 Hz supply, so confirm the frequency before buying. For more head, see the 0.75 kW LB-800 models below (15 m maximum head at 50 Hz).

What's in the box
- LB-480 pump with attached cable and hose coupling × 1
- Hose band × 1
- Operation manual × 1
Optional accessories
- 50 mm (2 in) layflat or suction hose: push it fully onto the hose coupling and secure it with the hose band.
- Male threaded pipe coupling (special order): for connecting rigid pipe.
- External float switch: for automatic operation by water level, add a float switch, or choose the LB-480A automatic model instead.
- Earth leakage circuit breaker (ELCB) and thermal overload relay: set to the rated current; purchased separately.
Safety and installation
- Electrical connection must be made by a registered electrical worker in line with local regulations, with earthing, an ELCB and a thermal overload relay. Never connect the earth wire to a gas pipe, water pipe, lightning rod or telephone earth.
- The 110V and 220V versions are not interchangeable: make sure the nameplate voltage and frequency match the supply, and that the voltage is within ±10% of the rating. When running from a generator, avoid powering other equipment from the same generator.
- Lift the pump by its handle with a rope or chain rated for its weight. Never lift, hang or pull the pump by the cable. Do not scratch, fold, twist, modify or bundle the cable, and never use a damaged cable, plug or outlet.
- Never run the pump while anyone is in the sump or water, and never start it while it is suspended, as it may jerk.
- Switch off and unplug before inspection or maintenance, and never work with wet hands. The motor protector resets automatically: after a trip, disconnect the power and remove the cause. After a power cut, switch off the supply, otherwise the pump will restart when power returns.
- Do not run the pump dry or against a closed valve. Keep at least about 50 mm of water for continuous running, and do not run it at abnormally low head or with a clogged impeller.
- Operate the pump upright. If it may draw in mud, stand it on a concrete block. Lay the discharge hose as straight as possible with its outlet above the water surface to avoid kinks, air lock and backflow (siphoning).
- The pump is neither explosion-proof nor dust-proof; never use it where toxic, corrosive or explosive gas is present, and never for drinking water. The surface is hot during and just after operation, so do not touch it with bare hands.
- Tsurumi notes that published specifications may change; obtain the delivery specification sheet before use.
Wear parts and routine checks
- Periodic replacement parts (per the Tsurumi operation manual): mechanical seal (when the oil turns milky), lubricant, oil plug packing or O-ring (at every disassembly or inspection), V-ring (when worn and at every disassembly or inspection) and shaft sleeve (when worn). Drawing in large amounts of mud wears the pump prematurely and reduces flow.
- Oil chamber: inspect the oil every 1,000 hours or 6 months, and change it every 2,000 hours or 12 months, whichever comes first (turbine oil ISO VG32, 155 ml). Milky oil or oil mixed with water points to a failing mechanical seal, and the pump must be disassembled and repaired.
- Check the operating current (within the rated current) and supply voltage (within ±10% of rated) daily, and measure insulation resistance monthly (reference value at least 1 MΩ). A new or repaired pump must read at least 20 MΩ.
- Mechanical seal inspection and replacement need specialised equipment, so refer it to your dealer or local Tsurumi office. Tsurumi recommends an overhaul every 2 to 5 years even if the pump runs normally, and sooner for pumps in continuous use.
